This has sure been a busy couple of months doing sportsman shows. I feel like that old Hank Snow song when he was singing “I’ve been everywhere man I’ve been everywhere”. I started in Sacramento, CA then to Puyallup, WA then to Portland, OR then to Pittsburgh, PA then to Reno, NV. I leave in the morning for Redmond, OR then in a couple weeks to Spokane, WA. YEE HAA then I get to start fishing. I really like doing the shows. I get a chance to meet a lot of people and also get to see a lot of hunting and fishing spots all over the world. I think I have myself talked into an elk-hunting trip for this next year. I just have to decide where to go and who to go with. I do have it narrowed down to a couple spots. I can’t wait. Anyway, we have been booking a lot of trips and I wanted to let everyone know what fishing and hunting is available for this year with us. As most of you know, but for the new subscribers to the newsletter I will let you know again, that we run two outfits. I have been a fishing guide on the Columbia River for a lot of years. I fish for sturgeon, salmon and steelhead. I will be fishing from the last week of March through most of July. We also own a hunting outfit in Wyoming that is also awesome. We hunt mule deer, whitetail deer and antelope. We have about 200,000 acres of private land that we have leased from a bunch of different ranchers in the area and our success rate is fantastic with very good accommodations. First, here is what’s going on in the fishing.
There will be both keeper sturgeon and salmon fishing going on the end of March through the first couple of weeks in May. We are all kind of anxious about the salmon run. We are told that we are supposed to get a huge run this year and they are letting us fish up by Bonneville Dam. This is my stomping ground so we should see a lot of salmon. We will be sitting on anchor using sardine wrapped Quik-Fish and also using some spinners. This is very effective in that part of the river where the currant is running at a fast pace. If you are planning on heading up there with your own boat and have not fished up there before be very careful. The river runs very fast up towards Bonneville Dam and with all the snow we have gotten this year it will be at it’s worse. Make sure you have at least 300 feet of rope and a heavy anchor. This time of the year we see many boaters get messed up in that currant. If you are not familiar with it and you are heading up and not sure of how to fish it please do not hesitate to give me a call or if you are up there just ask one of the guides you see for some advice. Most guides up there are pretty good. You will run into a few boneheads but if you do just go to the next one and ask. We would rather help you out then see you mess up a half a dozen boats. Once you get a fish hooked up you will throw your anchor ball over and float down with the fish so you want to make sure you have a lot of room because you will go down river fast and especially if there is an east wind. If you are unsure if what is going on then just book a trip with a guide for a day then you can get a feel of what is going on. Here are the dates I have available for March through the first couple weeks of May. Remember we can only keep sturgeon on Thursdays through Sundays. I have March 27, 28, 29, 30, April 4, May 1, 4, 8, 9, 10 and 11 for keeper sturgeon. I have April 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 14, 16 for Spring salmon.
On May 16th it will open for shad fishing on the Columbia River and that is when I will start fishing for the giant sturgeon. This is so much fun. These fish will average 200-400 pounds and to watch a fish like that tail walk behind the boat while you are fighting it is pretty good stuff. Here are the dates I have from May 16th through July: May 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, June 2, 3, 4, 16, 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 and most of the first half of July. After July I will be heading to Wyoming and doing some maintenance of the bunkhouse getting it ready for hunting this year. But, before I talk about our hunting I have to tell you this joke that was emailed to me.

Four guys go fishing. After an hour, the following conversation
took place.

First guy: “You have no idea what I had to do to be able to come out
fishing this weekend. I had to promise my wife that I
will paint every room in the house next weekend.”

Second guy: “That is nothing, I had to promise my wife that I will
build her a new deck for the pool.”

Third guy: “Man, you both have it easy! I had to promise my wife
that I will remodel the kitchen for her.”

They continue to fish when they realized that the
fourth guy has not said a word. So they asked him.

“You haven’t said anything about what you had to do to be able to
come fishing this weekend. What’s the deal?”

Fourth guy: “I just set my alarm for 3:30 am. When it went off, I
shut off my alarm, slapped my wife on the butt and said, are we
making love or am I going fishing? She said don’t forget the sun block.

Let’s talk some hunting. I am so excited about our hunting outfit out in Wyoming. The last couple years have went great. We had 64 hunters last year and all filled but two and the two that didn’t fill could have. It is unbelievable how many animals we see in a day. You can see some of our hunters for the last couple of years at:
www.kodakgallery.com/gimmeago
It is a great place because we have hunts for everyone. No matter what you limits are we have a hunt for you. If you like covering the country and getting right out and hunting we have leases for you to hunt. If you have limitations of how much walking you can do we have hunts for you also and everyone has opportunities to get your animal. Our bunkhouse is very nice. It has 4 big rooms that sleep 2-4 people and each room has it’s own bathroom and shower. We hunt deer and antelope and they are very plentiful. I also have to get into the turkey hunting some because there are so many turkeys out there it’s unbelievable. You can see a few hundred turkeys everyday. I have to hire a turkey guide and just let him/her do nothing but turkey guiding. Anyway, I have room for one more group for a rifle combo deer/antelope hunt for 2008 and I am full and I am booking for 2009. I do have room for a couple archery groups for combo hunts yet for 2008 and again I am also booking for 2009. We do have room for antelope hunting only for rifle and archery for 2008. The draw is coming up. The deadline is March 15th. We will have leftover antelope licenses but you never know about leftover deer licenses. When you give us a call my wife will walk through the whole drawing process with you.
Give us a call if you are interested in any fishing with us on the Columbia River or hunting with us in Wyoming. We would love the opportunity to hunt and/or fish with you. Thanks again for being great customers and for you that haven’t got to get out with us yet we are sure looking forward to doing that with you. Have a great day and talk to you soon.

August Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/august-newsletter/2008/01/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/august-newsletter/2008/01/#comments Wed, 23 Jan 2008 02:06:31 +0000 Jon http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/august-newsletter/2008/08/ Hey Everyone,

How is your summer going? It has been a good summer here at the Ball family house. As most of you know, I have a grandson that just turned 4 years old and he is very good at it. He sure put a hurt on the shad this year. It is so fun taking kids fishing however I don’t think this kid has a chance. Already he wants to shoot an antelope. He just loves getting in the boat but it is fun to watch him get his camo on and sneak around the house with his little gun and shoot the deer and antelope off the wall. Those animals won’t have a chance here in a few years.
I sure like this time of the year. Football is starting up, getting out and Scouting for that big animal to hunt in the fall and the rivers are full of fish. This is when a guy has to get his priorities in order. Which reminds me of a joke.

A Denver Broncos’ fan was enjoying himself at the game in a packed Mile High Stadium, until he noticed an empty seat down in front. He went down and asked the guy next to it if he knew whose seat it was.
The guy said, “Yes, that’s my wife’s seat. We have never missed a game since the Craig Morton days, but now my wife is dead.”
The fan offered his sympathy and said it was really too bad that he couldn’t find some relative to give the ticket to and enjoy the game together.
“Oh no.” the guy said. “They’re all at the funeral.”
Okay, that was a groaner but it does remind us to keep things in order. ( I am in trouble for this one). We better talk some hunting and fishing.
Wyoming Hunting
Stacy and I just got back the other day from our place in Wyoming. We went over there to do some work on the bunkhouse and to touch base with the landowners to see how the animals are doing. Everything went pretty good. Our bunkhouse is only a couple years old and when we bought it the flooring hadn’t been put down yet so that is what we went and did. We also had some trouble with the electrical breakers when all the grills were put to use in the kitchen. We won’t have that problem anymore. But, more importantly we saw a lot of good animals. Wyoming got a lot of rain this year and everything was green. There was grass waist high and that sure made for some good horn growth. We saw so many more antelope then last year with many bucks with cutters above the ears. The whitetails were incredible. Lots of real nice bucks were all over. Another great thing we saw was all the fawns. There were so many twins and triplets you couldn’t believe it. There will be good animals for a lot of years. I had one rancher tell me that the last two years were the lowest numbers they seen for years and now the cycle will go back up for a good number of years. I thought if the last couple years were low numbers I can’t wait to see what good numbers will be. We saw animals all over the last couple years so this will be exciting.

I picked up another good lease and had a meeting with another rancher for another good lease. I will know more about that one this September. We had a shooter mule deer come right down to the bunkhouse one night. It had a very tall rack. We didn’t see a lot of big mule deer because the big bucks we still up in the high country. One of my ranchers told me that there is so much green grass up there that the big bucks will probably not come down until the end of August to the first part of September when the grass dies out. I was told an interesting thing by a biologist. He said that when everything is healthy for a mule deer buck, they get all the water they need and the minerals are there for them that you will seldom see a spike or a three-point buck. That when everything is right the first year will be a two point and the second a small four-point and then grow each year from there. I believe this now because I saw so many young bucks with very deep 2-points on them. We never seen this the last couple years but everywhere you went there was a two-point with 8 inch and better forks. The horn growth on everything was good enough for Stacy and I to buy a couple whitetail deer licenses.
We still have room for about 6 or so antelope hunters for this year. We have lots of leftover licenses available. My deer hunts always book up so I don’t have room for anymore this year but I am booking for next year now. I didn’t do it this year because I do not want to over hunt my leases, but I am going to book 2-3 archery deer hunts for next year. Then the rifle deer/antelope combo hunts will be the first 10 days of October. Then I will do a few combo whitetail/antelope combo hunts the first week of November. If you are interested in booking an antelope hunt for this year or any hunting for next year please give us a call. I will be leaving for Wyoming around the 13th of September. My wife, Stacy will be here but here is my bunkhouse phone number in case you need to get a hold of me over there. It is 307-758-4626.
Salmon Fishing
I will be around for some fall salmon fishing. Guys this is usually always a very good run of fish. I will start this the last of August and will fish through the second week of September. I expect it to be pretty good this year due to all the water we got. The biggest thing for catching these fall salmon is the water temperature. You can have a million salmon going under the boat but if the water is too warm those fish will not bite. If you have a cooler water temperature then you can get by with less of a fish run because they will be biters. The way we fish these fall salmon is easy for everyone. If you know me then you know I like easy for my customers. We sit on anchor on some strategic spots that we know salmon are going to come through. Depending on the type of water we are fishing we will use either a wobbler or a wrapped Qwik-Fish. We use the wobblers in the slower water like the mouth of the Sandy River and Quik-Fish up around the Bonneville Dam area. The Columbia River offers a lot of different type of water, which makes for some different style of fishing. We need at least 4 people for a full boat but I can fish up to 6 people. A full day is around 8 hours and then I will be doing some half-day trips after the full day. Give us a call if you are interested in doing any salmon fishing with us. It will fill up so you do not want to wait to the last minute.
I am also still fishing right now up around the Bonneville area for trophy sturgeon and steelhead. The sanctuary opened up August 1st so there is some good trophy sturgeon fishing going on. These fish have not been messed with for 3 months so a nice shad dropped down in front of their noses will surely get a fight going. Like I said earlier, we just got back from Wyoming so I haven’t been out fishing for a couple weeks but I hear that the steelhead are doing very well. These will be the “B” run which are the bigger steelhead making their way to the Snake River. These are fun combo trips.
This is for you local guys. August 9th we are having Boyd Iverson come to our club and talk to us about blacktail deer hunting. This guy is great. He has a few books out on trophy blacktail deer tactics and the proof is on his wall. You don’t want to miss this. We will have a dinner for you and Boyd Iverson talking about hunting can it get better then that? Give me a call if you want some info. I will give you directions of where it is at. You can also go to the web site www.crosstrackers.com for more info.
Anyway, thanks again for your business and I hope to fish and/or hunt with you soon. Be safe and remember to take a kid in the outdoors with you your next time out.

April Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/april-newsletter/2008/01/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/april-newsletter/2008/01/#comments Wed, 16 Jan 2008 17:15:02 +0000 Jon http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/april-newsletter/2008/04/ Hey Everyone,
How is everyone doing? We are all fine here. I have been busy fishing for both spring salmon and keeper sturgeon and it has been awesome. We limited the boat yesterday for salmon and had 3 guys that had never caught a salmon before. They were stoked. It is always exciting for me to see the looks and actions of a first timer getting their first fish or game animal. It is the rewarding part of my job that just keeps me going. I think that everyone needs to reflect every now and then about your first fish that you landed or the first big game animal you shot. Some of you have heard my story of my first deer I ever shot. Growing up me dad never spent time with us teaching my brother and I about hunting or fishing so we learned it on our own. I was a hunting/fishing nut from an early age. I never got to do it much until I was about 12 years old where I could start getting out on my own a little. Anyway, I didn’t know anything about a buck or a doe or a season or a caliber you were supposed to use. I knew nothing except I loved going shooting with my .22 that I bought when I was about 10. Well, we moved to a little town called Ethel WA. When dad backed the U-Haul in the driveway, we saw 5 deer in the back yard. I went nuts. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing, deer right in my yard. This was a dream come true. Did you ever see the movie “Where the Red Fern Grows”? That was me. I couldn’t stop thinking about those deer. Are there more? Will I ever see them again? Does that happen a lot to just have deer come in your yard? Well, one day I was out shooting my .22 single shot out in the woods behind our house and I could not believe what I was seeing. Three deer were standing not 30 feet from me. You have been there you know how hard my heart was pounding. I was shaking so bad that I thought there was something wrong with me. I had never heard of buck fever. I had never heard about a buck. But, there were deer right in front of me and I was loving it. I had to shoot one. I aimed my .22 at the head of one and there was no way to keep that gun steady. I was shaking uncontrollable. I held it as steady as I could and shot. Two of the deer ran off but one stayed there. I am sure just laughing at me but for whatever reason that one deer stayed. I loaded another shell, took aim and shot again. The deer just starred at me. Feeling like I was going to loose a chance of a lifetime, I loaded another shell as fast as I could, aimed and shot again. Again I missed. Did I tell you this is about 30 feet away? I had just been shooting fir cones off the trees at three times the distance and hardly ever miss but I couldn’t hit this deer at 30 feet. I loaded again and missed again. I did this eight times. Finally, the ninth shot I hit the deer and it dropped like a rock. I did it. I shot my first deer. I was jumping up and down. I was yelling and laughing. I had shot a deer. I could have died right there and been happy. I started gutting this trophy out and I am sure that was a site. I had never seen so much blood in my life and boy did that gut stink when my knife cut it wide open. I got it as cleaned out as I thought it should be and started dragging it home. I was about a half mile from our house so I figured it would be best to drag it to the road then to the house. I wouldn’t have to go through all the woods this way. I started dragging that deer and it sure got heavy but I kept going. I drug it right down Larmon road to my house. I am sure cars had to of went by and seen what I was doing but no one stopped and my chest was stuck out as wide as a 12 year old boys chest could stick out. I finally made it to our driveway and ran in the house yelling for my dad to come out and see what I did. Hey dad I shot a deer and at that time all deer hunting education was brought out. “You what?” Dad had managed to pop my whole bubble. I found out there was a season in which you had to hunt in. I found out there that bucks are boy deer with horns and does are the girls. I shot a girl deer. I found out there are guns you can use and guns you can’t use while hunting deer. A .22 is one you can’t use. There was nothing I did right in that hunt. But, one thing else I found out. Venison is good stuff. I did it wrong but I will never forget that first deer. After that I hunted every chance I had. A good friend of mine named Don and I spent every bit of time we had hunting together. My grandpa got wind of what I did and sent me out a 30-40 Krag and that was my first hunting rifle. The first doesn’t have to be the biggest to be your best. While remembering your first hunting trip or fishing trip, think of a kid around you that might need some a chance at his/her first. It is rewarding.
Let’s talk some fishing. Keeper sturgeon is red hot right now. Sunday we were done by 9:00am. I had a group that had to catch a plane so we had to be off the water by noon. It never fails. You tell me we have to be off the water at a certain time and we will hook an oversize sturgeon 10 minutes before we have to leave every time and we did just that. That poor guy worked so hard on that fish to get it up as fast as he could and he did it. We pulled anchor and I cleaned fish as fast as I could. They made it okay and that was a great day. I have had something happen that I can’t remember when it last happened. I have had two cancellations for this week. This is a prime time keeper sturgeon fishing folks. I could have booked these days 25 times but life happens sometimes. If you can go on a short notice it is open for full boats both the 17th and 18th of this week. Give us a call and we will get you in for those dates.
Spring salmon fishing is red hot also. We are doing great. I was told by a biologist to not plan on fishing past the 20 of April. He thought the quota would be reached. I have not heard anything yet so if you want to book a spring salmon trip I have the 21 and the 23 open. You have to understand that the F&G can close it at any time so we may not be able to fish but it is worth getting on the books just in case. We are getting limits just about every day and everyday it keeps getting better.
Remember May 16th we will start fishing for the trophy sturgeon. I have a few dates left in May and some in June. Give us a call if you want a lot of fun and some bragging rights. The first of July we will be doing some combo sturgeon and salmon trips with some steelhead being caught. We will do that through mid July then I am heading over to Wyoming to do some carpet work in the bunkhouse.
Remember if you didn’t get your hunting draws you were hoping to get, you can still hunt. I will have antelope tags available so give us a call on that if you are interested.
Thanks and keep safe in the outdoors. Don’t forget to take a kid fishing or hunting with you.

I hope everything is fine in your neck of the woods. I have a week off before I head over to Spokane, WA to do my last sportsman show so I thought I would get a newsletter out. It seems lately that my letters have been rushed a bit with too much business and not enough life in it so let me get you caught up on what is going on in our life.
It was fun last year to have my 18-year old daughter help me out over in Wyoming. She did everything from cleaning rooms to guiding and gutting. She might make out to be a good kid anyway. She will be back out again this year to work with me again. She shot a goofy horned antelope last year and a nice little whitetail. It is so much fun watching your kids hunt and take an animal. I am not sure if that isn’t the most satisfying thing to watch. Our 15-year old daughter wants to come out this year and shoot an antelope. I can’t wait. My wife and I also took a couple of good antelope. It was my wife’s first big game kill and now she is planning her caribou trip, lion trip and I think she even mentioned a sheep trip. I told her to get another job. You can see last seasons photos at: www.kodakgallery.com/gimmeago

My youngest son is doing well in the army. We are very proud of him. He finished basic last summer then graduated from his medic school. After that he got into Air Borne and graduated from that now he is in Georgia getting ready to get into RIP then Rangers. He is one beat up kid. I talked to him the other day and for the first time I could hear a bit of anxiety in his voice. He said he was no way going to quit but he was hurting. I reassured him that this isn’t for the weak. That he is in an elite group and it is supposed to be hard. I am sure he will do well.
My little 3-year old grandson is growing like a weed. He runs the place. He keeps telling me that he wants to shoot an antelope then gets mad when I tell him we can’t do that right now. He goes and gets his gun and grabs me by the finger to head out hunting. That boy doesn’t have a chance.
Stacy and I have just been busy with shows. It has been going very well. I did, for the first time, the RMEF show in Reno. It was great. I am sure we will be doing that show from now on. What great people I met there. It seemed like all the egos were left out at the door and that everyone no matter what you were hunting was important. The down side is that those dirty rotten no good $&%&% slot machines. I NEVER win anything on those yet I keep trying. I went over to the show with an old buddy of mine. That Friday night we called our wives to fly over and spend the rest of the weekend with us. I am glad we did because my buddy’s wife won $1300 and my wife won $300. THANK YOU GIRLS!!! Although they did forget the sharing part of the money. Oh well we had fun.
We are still booking hunts for 2008. We are all full on our deer hunts for this year and we are starting to book for 2009. We do however have room for antelope hunts. October 12, 13 and 14 which is early season on the east side of the highway and we opening for the later hunt after the 15th for the west side of the highway. If you are not familiar with where we are, we are in the Buffalo/Sheridan area of Wyoming. Lots of animals and we have a lot of land to hunt them. We have about 200,000 acres of leases from ranchers all over that part of the country. The draw is easy to get however to make absolute sure you get the draw the dead line is coming up March 15th. I am sure we will have left-over tags but you never know.
I am still booking for fishing trips here on the Columbia River. I have 4 spots left for spring salmon. Those dates are April 8, 9, 14 and 16. We are supposed to get a huge salmon run this year and we are already hearing of fish going over Bonneville Dam so it looks like we will get them. I still have a couple keeper sturgeon dates left May 1, 9 and 10. The Trophy sturgeon season will start up on May 16th when the shad season opens. I do have trophy sturgeon dates left. I have May 20, 21, 27, 28 and 29. In June I have June 2, 3, 4, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 26-30. In July I have most of it open.
I have not announced the dates for fall fishing because I thought I was going to go on an elk hunt this year but we are going to wait and do it next year. Therefore, I have the second week of September open at this time. This will always book up so give us a call if you want to do some fall salmon fishing with us.
This would not be a newsletter without a bad joke so here we go.
A group of hunters got a pilot to fly them into the far north for elk hunting. They were quite successful in their venture and bagged six big bulls. The pilot came back, as arranged, to pick them up. They started loading their gear into the plane, including the six elk. But the pilot objected and he said, “The plane can only take four of your elk; you will have to leave two behind.” They argued with him; the year before they had shot six and the pilot had allowed them to put all aboard. The plane was the same model and capacity. Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put all six aboard. But when the attempted to take off and leave the valley, the little plane could not make it and they crashed into the wilderness.

Climbing out of the wreckage, one hunter said to the other, “Do you know where we are?”

“I think so,” replied the other hunter. I think this is about the same place where we landed last year!”

Okay I told you it was a bad one. Anyway, thanks for being great friends and customers to us. We always look forward to fishing and now hunting with you. If you haven’t yet been out with us I just want you to know that we are looking forward to the opportunity to do so. Thanks again and give us a call if you are thinking about a hunting or fishing trip.

May Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/may-newsletter-2/2008/01/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/may-newsletter-2/2008/01/#comments Thu, 10 Jan 2008 16:51:00 +0000 Jon http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/may-newsletter-2/2008/05/ Hey Everyone,

How is everyone doing? You guys here in the Northwest, did you get in on any of the spring salmon fishing on the Columbia River? It was pretty good but very short lived. We were told by the F&G that there was going to be this record spring salmon run on the Columbia River but I don’t think we have had as many salmon over Bonneville Dam as we did last year at this same time. I think it would be a good bet on which one is more reliable, a weatherman or a fish run prediction by the F&G. Anyway; my boat did all right on the salmon. As a matter of fact, the last Saturday and Sunday that salmon was open we limited both salmon and sturgeon. Those were a couple of good days. I think we limited on salmon most of the days in April. Spring salmon is sure a good table fair. My wife and I even got to get out one evening and get a couple nice ones. Now, since the salmon closure I have been hard and heavy after the keeper sturgeon. It has been a very good sturgeon bite. We have seen a lot of big keepers in the 50-inch bracket. Here on the Columbia River we can only keep sturgeon on Thursdays through Sundays and they have to be between 42” and 60 “. The way the keeper sturgeon came in so late I am sure that the bite will continue to be a good one through May. If you have not got your keeper sturgeon in the freezer yet, give me a call. I have 3 good dates left. May 15, 16 and 22 is what I have left to book. Today we were done with our keepers by 10:00 am. The end of May the keeper-size sturgeon will head down river to the estuary and gorge themselves on anchovies and sand shrimp. While they head down river the big trophy sturgeon are heading up river and a lot of them are here already. We hooked up 4 oversize sturgeon last week and they are fresh ones. The big breeder sturgeon follow the shad up and then spawn below Bonneville Dam. Shad season will open on May 16th. Those shad are a real fun fish to catch. The American Shad average about 2-4 pounds each and they really put up a fight. They come up river by the thousands so mid May through the first part of July you can catch these all day. It makes a great kids fishery because there is never a dull moment and all the kids on my boat are experts when I’m done with them. We have a great time. I book a lot of half-day trips for kids on these shad trips. When we start on the trophy sturgeon we catch shad in the morning and us that for the bait on the big sturgeon. Using a bait that is about 4 pounds is awesome. Fighting these big sturgeon make for some good videos. When you see a 400-pound fish tail-walk right behind the boat with your hook in his mouth, now that is an adrenaline rush. If you haven’t done this with me yet, come on out this June and let’s get you some bragging rights on one of these monster fish. Here is what I have available for dates:
Keeper Sturgeon – May 15th, 16th, and 22nd
Trophy Sturgeon – May 20, 21, 22, 27, 28, June 2, 4, 5, 16, 17, 19, 24, 25,
26 and 27

I sure got a lot of emails and comments about my last newsletter talking about my first deer. Thanks to you all. I have so many goofy stories about my buddies and I learning to hunt and fish together. If you have fished with me you have probably heard some of them. To think back on the things we did are just about embarrassing. I do mean it when I say thanks. At least I know some of you are reading this newsletter. Just kidding. Here is another story of my first steelhead trip.
I was about 12-years-old. I had my little $9.99 rod and reel and a can full of night crawlers and headed for the river. Now, at this point in my life I had no idea what a steelhead or salmon was. I knew what trout were. I knew what catfish were. I knew what other pan fish were but had no idea of what a steelhead or salmon was. I just couldn’t wait to get down to the Cowlitz River and see how the trout fishing was. So, I walked across the Toledo Bridge and hiked down behind this farmer’s house to see if I couldn’t get my 12 trout limit. The water was very clear so I could see my worm sinking below my bobber when I cast my line out right to the edge where the fast river and the back eddy met. As the night crawler was sinking I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. These giant “trout” came over and ate my night crawler. The fight was on but my line broke. Frantically, I tied on another hook, weight and bobber and cast out again and again another big “trout” grabbed the worm and broke my line again. This went on several times. Now, the smaller trout I could catch but the bigger ones kept taking off across the river and breaking my line. I was down to just a couple hooks left but finally I got my 12th trout. These were the biggest trout I have ever seen in my young little life. The smallest one was probably over 24”. Well, I cut a branch off a near by tree and started sliding these trout down the stick. After I finally got all 12 fish on that stick I could not believe how heavy it was so I had to drag them. So off I went down the gravel road and back across the Toledo Bridge. While on the bridge a log truck was coming across so I stopped on the edge of the bridge and so did he. The driver pulled up beside me, rolled down his window and said. “Boy, it looks like you got more then your limit”. I told him “nope. There’s twelve there” and kept walking. When I got home the neighbor straighten me right out and I found out that those “trout” were summer steelhead. I bet that log truck driver laughed all the way home about that. Oh well, I was introduced to steelhead fishing and have been addicted to it ever since.

If we can help with any of you summer fishing plans please give Stacy or I a call. We would love to talk with you and maybe get a day or two of fishing with you. Talk to you soon.

June Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter-2/2008/01/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter-2/2008/01/#comments Mon, 07 Jan 2008 21:36:24 +0000 Jon http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter-2/2008/06/ Hey Everyone,

Is it summer at anyone’s house because it sure hasn’t got here in Oregon yet. I have never complained about our wet weather here in the Northwest but I am getting close. I haven’t had the top off my boat all year. In April I had more snow fall on my boat while fishing than all my guiding years combined. This global warming is a killer. Well, we know that summer is just around the corner and that means it is time for the kids to get out of school. YEEE HAAA all the moms are saying. But, this is a great time for sportsman to get kids involved in the hunting and fishing. I need to get on a soapbox for a second. We need to start coming out of our comfort zone and start inviting our neighbor kids and kids that we have around us to fish and hunt with us. I was reading a magazine the other day and I am not sure of the numbers without going and looking it up again but it was scary to see the numbers falling of our next generation of sportsman. Kids are just not getting into the hunting and fishing like years past. They are our future of keeping hunting and fishing alive and well. We have many more of the population that would love to stop our rights to hunt and fish. Our guns are at risk of being taken away more then ever before. I am not going to go political in this newsletter but I will say that I am scared of what is going on. Folks, look for kids to get out with you. When you take kids out, go at their pace not yours. If a 2-hour fishing trip is all they can do to stay excited then make it 2 hours not 10 hours. They will want to come back if they are comfortable. Remember, being out is new to a lot of them. On my boat I see dads bring their kids out for a fishing day and the dads want to make it this macho thing. The dad has his $300 gortex on and the kids have a WallMart garbage bag on they call rain gear. Make them Comfortable and fun then they will want to come back. Allow them to have the freedom to make mistakes. It’s okay they will learn. I had a father and son out one day and the kid hooked a salmon that turned out to be a bit more then 40 pounds. That dad was on that kid so much about keeping his rod up, keep the line tight, get on the right side of the boat and it went on and on. The kid was so scared not to loose the fish. He didn’t really care if he got the fish at this point he just didn’t want to loose it and make his dad mad. I finally said, jokingly but serious to back off and let him enjoy this fight. We got the fish but when I put it in the net the kid really didn’t care. He was just relieved he didn’t lose it. I doubt if that kid will ever fish with his dad when he is older. It is just a fish and nothing more. We have got to change our definition of a successful day. We should not equate our success to a day that we kill a fish or a deer but that we are out in God’s great creation and we get to spend time with others and we have an opportunity to share our experiences with the younger. It is such a blessing to see a kid out fishing for the first time or seeing his/her eyes when they see their first herd of elk for the first time. It WILL come back to you 10 folds. Anyway, I will get off the soapbox and talk some fishing and hunting now.

BIG STURGEON ARE IN

We are having a blast catching these big sturgeon out here on the Columbia River. Every year I still get wowed when I see a 300-pound sturgeon tail walking behind the boat. We had one the other day that jumped out if the water 4 times and on 2 of the jumps there was probably a foot or two of air between that fish’s tail and the water. Because of the big snow fall from Oregon to Canada we are having an incredible snow melt this year and that is making some very high water to fish. We are not seeing too much problem with getting the sturgeon but we are having trouble with the shad bite for bait. The early morning shad bite has been very slow. By mid morning when the light gets on the water then we are doing okay. If you are new to this newsletter and/or fishing out here in the Northwest let me give you a run down of what we are catching. Right now we are fishing for the trophy sturgeon. They are the big breeders that are migrating up the Columbia River to spawn. These sturgeon are big and old. Kind of like me. A female sturgeon is 23-28 years old before she even gets her reproduction system. A male is 15 plus years before he has his. We know that a sturgeon can live over a hundred years so these are some old timers. Our average sturgeon that we are catching right now is about 200-400 pounds. It is all catch and release of these breeders but they will make a video you will watch over and over. We use shad for bait. The American Shad average about 2-4 pounds each and we get a few million of these fish coming up the Columbia River every year. We go up in the morning and beside this year we have enough bait in 20 minutes. Shad are very fun to catch and make a great fishing trip for kids because there is a lot of action and they are very good fighters. Anyway, we catch these shad and use them whole for bait. It is pretty impressive to see a 4-pound bait used in fresh water. I have had a lot of people tell me the shad we are catching is the biggest fish they had ever caught. It is a lot of fun. Now through the summer is a good time to catch the trophy sturgeon. We will have a bit of a bonus this month also. We will be able to do some combo salmon/sturgeon trips. We are going to have June 21-28 open for salmon fishing. These are the big king salmon. It is not our biggest run of the river but if you get one it will be a large salmon. Catching a summer salmon that is 30-40 pounds is not uncommon. But, we will be able to do both if you want and I do have a few dates left. I will give you those dates later.
I am going to fish through the middle of July. In July we will also be able to do combo fishing trips. We will be able to do trophy sturgeon and steelhead at that time. You get into a bunch of steelhead you are talking about a lot of fun. Then we are heading to our bunkhouse in Wyoming to do some maintenance. Doesn’t that sound like fun? But, I have to get ready for our hunts this fall. By the way, if you did not get your hunts that you put in for, we will have Antelope tags available for this year. I have room for 12-15 more antelope hunter for 2008. Give us a call if you are interested in that.
Well, let me give you some dates that I still have available for fishing. For June I have 16, 17, and 24-27 available. July is mostly open at this time. We will be catching shad through June and usually the first week or so of July. Please give us a call if you want any more info about any of these trips, hunting or fishing. Thanks about talk to you soon. Remember take a kid with you on your next trip.

How is your summer going? This is the strangest weather I have ever seen. It goes from one extreme to another. This spring we had more snow drop on us out in the boat then any other year I can remember. It was so cold there were days you could not get enough clothes on. Now we are in 100-degree weather. What happened to the days of our mild wet northwest weather in the spring and our beautiful 75-degree summer days? Although, our weather could always be worse. Some of you are in a real heat wave and I cannot believe the fires all over. Maybe I should just quit complaining and talk some fishing and hunting. Let’s start with the fishing.

STURGEON FISHING

We have been doing very well with the big sturgeon. Folks, these fish are magnificent. A couple of weeks ago we had the longest fight ever on my boat. These customers fought this sturgeon for 2 hours and 10 minutes and they were putting the hurt on this fish. It wasn’t like they were just babying this fish. They were working it steady for over 2 hours. My average fight will last 20-30 minutes. But, this fish was hot. We measured it and the fish was just under 11 feet long and very heavy. It was awesome. It was fresh right up from the ocean. I had a few very tired fishermen on the boat but I think they would have done it again in a heartbeat. We have seen some very big fish this year. Yesterday we got 4 fish to the boat and 3 of them were between 9 and 10 feet long. These trophy sturgeon usually average about 7 ½ - 8 feet and those fish are around 200 pounds. The three big ones yesterday were in the 350-400 pound bracket. That is huge and to see them jump out of the water on their tails is an incredible sight to see. If you haven’t gotten out with me yet to fight one of these trophies you are missing out. Give us a call and let’ do it. I will continue on the trophy sturgeon through July 14th then I am heading to our bunkhouse in Wyoming to do some maintenance on it. I will be back the first week of August.
Fishing either July or August will be good. Right now in July we are still getting fresh fish from the ocean and these fish are hungry and wild. I like fishing the early ones. In August the area below Bonneville Dam will open back up. You see on May 1st a sanctuary is in place below Bonneville Dam and it goes down for about 3-4 miles so the sturgeon can go up and spawn without being harassed. August 1st that sanctuary is lifted and we can fish up there. This can be some great fishing since these fish haven’t been messed with for 3 months. There should also be a lot of steelhead in the river at that time so we will be doing a lot of combo trips. I will continue fishing for sturgeon and steelhead through the end of august. Then it is fall salmon time.
I am going to fish fall salmon the last part of August through September 14th. This is a great time for our salmon fishing here on the Columbia River. It should be very good this year due to all the snow we got this last winter and spring. We usually always get a good, healthy run of fall salmon but on some years that we didn’t get much snow in the mountains created some low water and very warm temperatures and those salmon are just not going to bite well when the water is too warm. This year should be a great bite.
The way I do my salmon fishing is easy for everyone. I am usually always on anchor on strategic spots where I know salmon are going to come through. I will be using either a wobbler lure or Qwik-Fish depending where we are. This is a good fishery for everyone to do. We just get the rods out and when one lays flat the fight is on. I will probably start fishing the mouth of the Cowlitz River then work my way up to the mouth of the Sandy River then work my way up to Bonneville Dam area. These fall salmon also can run pretty big. My biggest on my boat was a big bright 52-pounder. That is a good salmon in anyone’s book.
Give Stacy or I a call and we would love to talk to you about a trophy sturgeon trip or a fall salmon trip. Now, let’s talk some hunting.

Wyoming Antelope Hunting

Well, did you get you tags you wanted to hunt this year? My family didn’t draw a thing here in Oregon. These draws make me wonder sometimes. I talked to a guy the other day about sheep hunting in Oregon. In Oregon we do not have a point system for big horn sheep. It is a lottery draw. I am talking to this guy and he told me that he put in for this unit that he knew very well and drew the tag a few years ago. He got a good sheep and put his wife in for that area the next year and she drew. Then this guy was talking to a friend of his about sheep hunting and he told his buddy to put in for this unit that both he and his wife drew so this guy did. His first try he drew the tag. That is either a lot of good luck but it doesn’t sound right to me. I know guys older then me that has put in since they started this draw and has never drawn. I just am not sure about these draw-hunts. Anyway, if you have not drawn and are looking for a place to hunt then give us a call. We will have leftover antelope tags for our place over in Wyoming. This is a great hunt for everyone. Lots of animals to choose from. We will be in them all day long. It is a very fun place to hunt. Last year we had leftover antelope tags available clear to the end of the season and I have no reason to believe we will not have a lot of leftover tags again this year. I have talked to a couple of my ranchers over there and they got a lot of rain this year. That should make for some very good horn growth. I will have hunts available for October 15th through the end of October. I have room this year for about 10 more hunters. Give us a call if that will fit you schedule.
How are you doing in inviting kids around your neighborhood on an outdoor outing? It is not too late. There is a lot of summer left. Don’t miss the chance to make an impact on a kid’s life.
One more thing before I go. This is for you guys that are in the Portland area. We have started a hunting/fishing club here in Sandy Oregon. It is going very well. Without going into a lot of details, I will tell you that this club is a bit different then a lot of other fishing/ hunting clubs. This is a tough time for a lot of you guys out there and we want to help if we can. We are trying to be more then a fishing/hunting club. We want to encourage men during this tough time. Once a month we have what we call our main event. We feed you well and then have a guest speaker come in and give us a seminar of his expert area. We had a tuna guy come in last month that was awesome. July 19th we have an outfitter from eastern Oregon coming to give us a seminar on archery elk hunting and calling. It should be great. Then in August 9th we are having Boyd Iverson come and talk to us about trophy blacktail tactics. Boyd is an author of a few books on blacktail hunting. He has the proof on his wall at home that his tactics work. There is no cost to come to any of our main events. All you guys are invited. Give me a call and we can talk more about it. You can learn more about our club at www.CrossTrackers.com.
Thanks again for giving me a bit of your time and I hope to fish or hunt with you this year. Stay safe and take a kid with you on your next outing.

November Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/november-newsletter/2007/11/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/november-newsletter/2007/11/#comments Fri, 23 Nov 2007 20:41:57 +0000 Jon http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/november-newsletter/2007/11/ Hey Everyone, November 23, 2007

Well, it has been a while since I sent out the last newsletter. I have gotten phone calls and emails from different ones wondering if I was still alive. I am still kicking and ugly as ever. We have had quite a year. From working for that friend of mine in Alaska this last summer to starting up the hunting in Wyoming this last fall I have been busier then a one armed paper hanger but have loved it. I have so much to talk about in this letter but I will try to keep it to a minimum so you won’t get too bored with it. I might even spare you from another bad joke or maybe not. We will see how it goes.
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving and now it is that Christmas frenzy time of the year. If anyone needs my Christmas list just give me a call. Okay, I am kidding but since it is Christmas time and it is a celebration of the birth of Jesus and kids all over the world are making out a Christmas list it reminds me of a joke. Haha! There was a little boy that wanted a new bike real bad so he decided to write Jesus a letter. He wrote, “Dear Jesus, if you give me a brand new bike I will be good for two weeks.” However after the little boy seen what he wrote he realized that being good for two weeks was not going to happen so he tears the letter up and starts another. “Dear Jesus, if you give me a brand new bike I will be good for one week.” But after reading it back to himself he again realized that being good for a week wasn’t even possible. So he starts another letter. “ Dear Jesus if you give me a brand new bike I will be good for a whole day.” The little boy read this back to himself with a bit of confidence but after thinking more about it he knew that even for a day was not going to happen. So very down and out the little boy was walking around the house sulking and wishing for a new bike. After walking by his mom and dad’s room the little boy noticed a statue of Mother Mary on their dresser. The little boy had an idea and took the statue, put it in a shoebox and slipped it under his bed and started another letter. “DEAR JESUS IF YOU EVER WANT TO SEE YOUR MOM AGAIN!
Okay I couldn’t resist now let’s talk about what’s been going on with the hunting and fishing. This is how this last year went. After the sportsman shows I fished here on the Columbia River from April through the first part of July. A week after that we flew out to my son’s graduation from basic training in Oklahoma. I am very proud of him. He joined the army and scored well on his test so he got to choose what he wanted to do and he chose ranger airborne medic. He is doing great and has another graduation this December 13th from the first part of his medical training. He is now an EMT. After graduation he gets to come home for a couple weeks then he starts his airborne training. Anyway, we went to his graduation then a couple days after we got back I headed to Alaska and worked for a friend of mine on Prince of Wales Island. It went pretty good. I learned a lot about the fishing up there and just love it. However after the season was over the friend of mine decided that he is going to sell his boat and farm the salt guiding out to other guides. So after seeing that I was not going to be working for him next year I thought I would look to do my own gig in Alaska. We found some land and are now in the process of buying it. I will have more info on this as soon as I know more of how it will pan out. We are excited about it. The land is right on this lake and is a beautiful place for a vacation. I can’t wait to get the cabins built. The hunting up there is very good, the fishing is better and the beauty of Alaska is even better. So please be patient with me about getting this up and going because I would love to have everyone come fish and hunt with me up in Alaska. It will be worth the wait.
After I got back from Alaska I fished salmon on the Columbia River for eight days then a couple days after that we headed off to Wyoming.
The Wyoming hunting is AWESOME! If you didn’t hear, we bought a deer/antelope hunting outfit from a guy that had it for about 30 years. It is a very reputable business and it is everything that he told me it was. We have a new bunkhouse with each room having it’s own bathroom and shower. All of our hunts are done on private leases and the tags have been 100% to draw so everyone that puts in gets to hunt for sure. We had about 60 hunters and all but two filled there tags but more importantly then that I think everyone had a great time. I have fantastic guides working for me and I think everyone went away weighing more then when they got there so the food was great also. It must have been good because the first week of next year is already booked from hunters that were there this year. We have mule deer, whitetail deer and antelope. This is a hunt that anybody can do. The hunts are as hard or as easy as you want them to be. The ones that like to get out and hunt, we have some good hiking for you and for the ones that are limited for whatever reason we have leases for you. Last year we had a guy in a wheel chair take a mule deer and an antelope with his bow. This is a hunt for everyone to do. Some of my family even got to hunt. My 18-year-old daughter came over with me and guided, gutted, skinned and cleaned for me and did an awesome job. She also took a dandy antelope and a whitetail deer. My wife while she was over also took an antelope and I didn’t want to loose out so I took an antelope also. I have some of our hunts online so you can look at them if you want. www.kodakgallery.com/gimmeago and go to 2007 hunts. If you are interested in hunting with us next year just give me a call or send me an email. I will talk about this a little more later on.
Now that I am back from Wyoming I am getting ready for the sportsman shows starting the first of the year. We will be doing six shows again this year. Here are the shows we will be at and their dates:

January 17-20 Sacramento California
January 23-27 Puyallup Washington
February 6-10 Portland Oregon
February 13 17 Monroeville Pennsylvania
February 28-March 2 Redmond Oregon
March 20-23 Spokane Washington

Please stop by and say hi. In some of these shows we will have booths in different parts of the show for our hunting and fishing but I will be at one of the booths. But I will be looking forward to seeing you.
Here is my schedule for next year of hunting and fishing. I will do shows through March. April through mid July I will be sturgeon and salmon fishing on the Columbia River. Hopefully I will be in Alaska in August working on the cabins and doing some fishing of my own. If this all works out then I will be looking to do some horse-trading. I am trading some carpentry work for some hunting in Wyoming or fishing is Alaska which ever. I have some coming already but if you are interested and have some carpentry experience please contact me. Then after I get back from Alaska I will fish for a week or so on the Columbia for salmon the first part of September then I will head to Wyoming after that. That sounds like a good year doesn’t it? I told my wife if I just had two more months in a year, one more day in a week and two of me this would be a cakewalk.
Anyway, with all the sportsman shows I am doing the fishing is booking up fast and there will always be room in the hunting but it is also booking. Our prices for the fishing on the Columbia River will be going up a little for next year. We are $150 per person now and it will go up to $175 for next year. If you book before January 1st we are still going to honor this years price. So, if you are looking for a day of fishing with me or looking for a great Christmas gift just give us a call. We would love to get you on the book for fishing next year. If you are thinking about hunting with us in Wyoming next year keep in mind that the deadline for the licenses are March 15th. Give us a call and we will walk through the process with you. We will generally always have leftover tags available but the easiest way is to do it before March 15th.
Thanks again for being great customers and I hope that the Christmas holidays are extra special for you all this year. Remember to take that neighbor kid fishing or hunting with you. You will make a difference for that child. Talk to you soon.

JS Outfitters Update http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/js-outfitters-update/2007/07/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/js-outfitters-update/2007/07/#comments Wed, 11 Jul 2007 21:47:28 +0000 Stacy http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/js-outfitters-update/2007/07/ Hey Everyone, July 2, 2007

The Wyoming F&G has posted the left over tags on their web site. I was told by the F&G that it would be July 10th but YEE HAA they got them out early. There is both deer and antelope available in most of the units we hunt. For all of you that are interested in hunting with us this year please give us a call before you buy any tags so we can tell you what unit to put in for and then you can go on line and purchase them. You will not want to wait long because I was told that last years left over tags sold in about a week. Here are our prices again just incase you need them. We have 2 rifle buck antelope hunts. We have what we call our motel hunt. This is a 2-day hunt and you take care of your own accommodations. My guide will pick you up where ever you are staying in Buffalo and take you out to the leases. This hunt is $1400. We have a 3-day antelope hunt where you are staying at one of the ranches and we take care of all the accommodations and this hunt is $2200. We have a 3-day rifle deer hunts and on both of these hunts you are staying at one of our ranches. The mule deer hunts are $3400 and the white tail hunts are $2700. We offered a combo hunt special at the sportsman shows this last year and we will continue the special this year and that is $3900 for a deer/antelope combo hunt. The dates for these hunts will be determined by which tags you buy. We have a split season in the areas we hunt. A few units we hunt are October 1-14 and the other side open October 15 through November 15.
When you purchase your tags give us a call back to verify it and at that time we will take the deposits for each hunter. We require a $600 deposit for each hunter and the day of the hunt we can take care of the balance.
If you have any questions about any of our hunts please contact us and my wife or I would love to answer any questions you might have or maybe you just want to talk hunting that is okay too. Thanks and talk to you soon.

June Newsletter http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter/2007/06/ http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter/2007/06/#comments Wed, 20 Jun 2007 16:53:30 +0000 Stacy http://sturgeon-salmon.com/news/june-newsletter/2007/06/ Hey Everyone,

I know this is one of the latest newsletters I have written. I usually get them out the first of the month but I have been so busy that I haven’t been able to do it but here it is. I have a lot to talk about so I am going to get right into it. Let’s first talk about Gimme A Go Fishing Adventures and fishing for shad and the trophy sturgeon. We have had a fair season on the trophy sturgeon this year. We have landed some giant fish. It is so awesome to see a 300-pound sturgeon blast out of the water and do a tail dance. You wouldn’t think that a fish like that would be so acrobatic but they are. We had one the other day jump 5 times and 3 of the jumps were less then 30 feet from the boat. They make great videos. But, it hasn’t been all red hot. We have had a few days this week that were pretty slow. When a weather front comes in those sturgeon just do not eat like usual. It’s not like they are migrating through like a salmon does. Those sturgeon are there but just off the bite. It’s kind of funny sometimes because when they are on the bite you only need a couple rods out to keep everyone busy but when they are off the bite you could have 10 rods out and it wouldn’t matter. I guess this is what makes fishing for these great white sturgeon so fun. I will be fishing the trophy sturgeon through the first week of July. I still have a couple dates open the first week of July. I have room for a couple people on July 1-3, I have a open boat available July 4-6. Give us a call if you are interested in doing some trophy sturgeon fishing during that time we can also do combo trips for trophy sturgeon and steelhead. The steelhead will start running the first part of July. Also, I still have room in the afternoons for shad fishing. This is a fun fishery for everyone. Lots and lots of fish to catch. The mornings have been a bit slower for shad fishing but the afternoons have been very good. Also, I am going to be fishing one week in the second week of September for salmon here on the Columbia River. The full days are already booked but I will start booking half days and the afternoon salmon bite can be good sometimes so let me know if you are interested in that.
The end of July I will be heading to Prince of Wales Alaska. I was going to be heading there July 15th but my son will be graduating from boot camp the end of July and I am not going to miss that. We are very proud of him and by the way he is doing great but I can’t wait to get there to Alaska after his graduation. I sure was jealous to hear how well they did up there on the spring steelhead. They had a group the latter part of May catch 92 steelhead in 6 days. That is a lot of steelhead. You can read about what is going on up there on our other web site www.thornebaylodge.com. We will keep you updated week by week of our hunting and fishing that is going on. We still have a couple spots available in August if you are interested and we are also booking of 2008. This spring the TV show Hawg Quest was up there and they had a great time and said they will be back. One of the guys I am working with up there got some great video of a monster black bear. He was trying to hunt it with his bow but just couldn’t get close enough. You can see a part of the video on the web site. It’s a dandy. I told him he was just letting it go for me when I get up there. I am looking forward to doing some hunting myself while I am there. I have never taken a bear with my bow and I am so excited to do that this year. I will let you know how that goes.
Talking about hunting, we will know about the left-over tags July 10th for our deer and antelope hunts in Wyoming. I will be sending an email out as soon as I know what is available. Last year there were over 1000 antelope tags left over and I was told they were gone in a week so when I let you know you will want to get on line and buy them. Then once you have bought your tags give us a call so we can get you on the books. The archery hunts are in September and we want to get you in for the last week. That is when the antelope are in full rut and they get a bit crazy at that time. The rifle deer and antelope hunts are in October. That is for mule deer or white tail deer. Then in November it is White tail deer and antelope only. You don’t want to hunt antelope too much past the first week of November because they are loosing their horns at after that. I am getting very excited about hunting with you all over there this year. It will be great. You just can’t believe how many animals there are over there. My 17 year old daughter wants to learn to guide so we will get her licensed up this year and let her start learning. I think she will do very well. We are heading over to Wyoming in July to start getting things ready. You can see more about our hunts at www.jonsoutdoors.com.
Well I can’t get out of here with out you hearing a bad joke so here it is. This guy walks into a bar and goes up to the bar to order a drink. As he is ordering his drink he notices a blond gal sitting beside him. He leans over to her and asks here if she would like to her a blond joke. All ruffled up she says you better wait on telling me a blond joke. You see this girl beside me? She is 5’ 8 and 165# and she is a world champion kick boxer and she is blond. The girl beside here is 5’ 10 and 185# and she is a champion boxer and she is blond. The girl beside her is 6’1” and 220# and she is a body builder and she is blond and the girl beside here is 5’ 10” and 240# and she is a weight lifter and she is blond. Now, do you want to tell me a blond joke? The guy jumped up and emphatically said NO NO there is no need for me to tell you a blond joke because if I have to explain it 5 times it just isn’t worth it.
Okay I am scrapping the bottom of the barrel for jokes but that is the best I have lately.
Anyway, give us a call if you are interested in any of these trips. We do have a couple days available for Columbia River fishing. There are still openings in August for a trip with us in Alaska and we will have left over tags and dates available for hunting with us in Wyoming.
Thanks and I will talk to you soon. Remember to take the opportunity and take a kid fishing or hunting with you. You will be blessed more then you can imagine.
