JULY 2011 NEWSLETTER
Hey Everyone,
How is your summer going? It sure can get busy during the summer, can’t it? The kids are out of school, vacations are being made, longer days usually mean longer work hours and we still trying to get the fishing in. I have been doing a lot of fishing this summer. Some fishing with the family and I have been very busy with customers. As you already know, I have 2 grandsons. I have one that just turned 7 and I have another that is 2 ½. I got my younger one out catching shad and he had a blast. He thought he was top dog when I let him steer the boat. I just love taking kids out like that. He is the son of my oldest son and I could tell on my son’s face how proud he was to have his dad and his son out fishing. It was great. My same son talked me into joining their softball team and I am sure that he is just getting even with me now that he can out hit the old man. We had 3 games in a row, the other night and I am telling you that I think they moved the bases out at least 10 feet after each game. I told my son that I just as soon pop up and go out easy then to hit a grounder to the short stop and think that I am going to run it out. HAAA. That is not happening. I have had a good time playing together with him and by the way, since I know you are laughing at me playing ball again. I did go 5 for 7. So HAAA to you. A guy has to try to stay young and I guess that is one way to do it. But, your mind says, “You can do that” but your body says, “You are crazy for trying”. Oh well, like an old steer, I will keep trying.
I have been doing a lot of sturgeon fishing this last month and it has been going pretty good and not a lot of fishing pressure. We have been seeing a lot of the giant sturgeon. I also spent a week down at the mouth of the Columbia River fishing for keeper size sturgeon. It was alright but not great. We did catch fish everyday but it wasn’t like it should be. But, what is any more. While I was down there, my wife came over for a couple days and we went razor clam digging and she kicked my butt. If you haven’t eaten razor clams, you are missing out. Stacy cooked some up a week or so ago and they were by far the best I ever ate. It was also a lot of fun. This June has been a fun one. I have had more out of State and even out of country, fisherman than I have had for a long time. It has been great. The salmon are also showing up and we have been getting a few fish, everyday I have been out. We will be hitting them pretty hard the next couple weeks.
The summer months have all kinds of different fishing available. We will be fishing for the trophy sturgeon all summer long. As a matter of fact, August is a great time because there is a section of river just below Bonneville Dam that closes every year May 1st for the sturgeon to go up and spawn without being harassed. August 1st that area will open up and we get to fish water that has been closed for 3 months. During that time, the steelhead will also be running so we will be doing a lot of combo fishing. I will also be getting out for tuna, when the ocean is in good condition. I sure have a lot of you wanting to go tuna fishing. Remember, I am only going when the ocean conditions are good. I am not going out on lumpy water. So, I will keep an eye on this website and when the water is right, I will send out an email that will have “Tuna Update” in the subject line. When you see that, give me a call and I will be going on first come, first serve bases. It is a great time and lots of tuna. The end of August and September, the fall salmon will start running and this is always our most consistent run of salmon. This will book up so give me a call if you are looking for a fall salmon trip. Now, let’s talk a little hunting.
We got the draw results in from Wyoming and just as I thought, we do have some left-over deer licenses available. We always have left-over antelope licenses but up to the last 2 years, I have not ever seen left-over deer licenses. Our deer are at their peek population and with the management I have been practicing on the ranches, both our mule deer and whitetail deer are doing great. I am sure the deer licenses will sell out fast. However, if you are still looking for a hunt this year, I have room for 2 more combo deer/antelope hunts and then I am full for those hunts. I do have room for whitetail hunts in November which are great hunts. I have room for a couple rifle antelope only hunts and I have room for archery hunters. I am still running the special for archery antelope. If you have 2 or more hunters then I will pay for your licenses. We are 100% opportunity for both archery and rifle so you will get a shot or two at quality animals. If you don’t get a shot, I will give your money back. Come on archery guys, give me a call. I may be wrong but I don’t think so but I believe that every antelope that we have taken with a bow would have made P&Y. I took one a couple years ago with my bow and it scored right around 73 and I took it spot and stalk. Yes, spot and stalk antelope. It is fun and the last few archery antelope customers I have had, that is how we got our bucks. We do offer great quality hunts. We have had Scott Haugen from Game Chasers out and they took good animals. We have had Bob Foulkrod and his wife out and they both took good antelope while on a spot and stalk archery hunt. It is a good hunt.
Don’t forget that I also started a hunting consultant business and I have hunts from Africa to Canada and all across the Unites States. I have trophy hunts, good blue collar hunts for respectable animals without the high price and I have cow hunts for meet. By the way, the cow elk hunts have only 4 spots left. Anyway, they are all top quality hunts. I just got tired of hearing my customers go on hunts that were by far honest hunts. Integrity seems to be lacking with some people. So, I have put together a resource of top notch outfitters that I would send my own family with. If you looking for a certain hunt, please give me a call and let me help. It doesn’t cost you anything extra to just check with me.
I hope you all had a great 4th of July celebration and from the bottom of my heart; I want to thank all the veterans for giving us the freedom to be able to celebrate. Thanks you for your service to us.
Remember to take a kid with you on your next outdoor trip. You will have an impact more than you will ever know. I have taking a few of the neighbor kids salmon fishing this week. I can’t wait. Talk to you soon and have a great summer.
