OREGON STURGEON FISHING TIPS
Here is some advice for you when you are fishing for trophy sturgeon around the Bonneville Dam area from May to the end of summer.
First, use heavy gear. A 6-7 foot heavy rod with a big enough reel that can hold at least 250 yards of a minimum of 65 pound test line. I use 80 pound. Use big hooks so that you can get a hold of them when you are releasing the fish. Use at least an 8/0 hook. I use 12/0 hook.
When you hook up one of these monsters, do not try to land them while on your anchor. You will rather get spooled and that fish will be running around with 250 yards of line. Or if you land him at the boat you will just about have to kill him to do so. Have an anchor set up with two floats so that when you hook up you can just throw the floats over and be free from the anchor and go fight the fish. Then when you are done you can run back up and tie right back where you were.
When anchoring during trophy sturgeon season, don’t anchor right below another boat. When he gets hooked up, his fish is going to wrap up in your anchor rope or your fishing lines. It is better to stay even with other boats then below or above. Remember anchor ropes are probably at least 250 feet long and your lines are out another 200 feet and when the fish is on he can go anywhere. I am saying all of this because it can get frustrating to get all wrapped up and kill a lot of fishing time. Work together out there.
When you land a trophy sturgeon do not take him out of the water. You will hurt the internal organs of the fish. I guess all I am saying is respect the fish, respect others and you will have a great time.
